You beat me to it, R2B2!!! I adore Kurt Vonnegut. Skaughterhouse 5 is the first "grown-up" book I remember loving - we read it in Mr. Souza's 10th grade English class. Then, also in high school but independently, I read an article he wrote about pacifism and the bombing of Dresden that pretty much set the tone for my feelings about war to this day. I'll see if I can find it online today.

Kurt Vonnegut lived on 47th Street and would sit on a bench in Dag Hammerskjold Plaza every day and read and people watch. I worked right on the Plaza (Japan Society) and would see him pretty much every day and just be in awe. He was always smiling and friendly and seemed like the coolest guy ever. I never spoke to him - too shit scared - but I would smile and he would nod and smile back. I'm getting choked up!!! We need more people like him.
